How to Avoid Getting Scammed by a Clothing Factory: Red Flags & Vetting Checklist

avoid clothing factory scam red flags — spools of thread hanging on a tailor workshop wall

"I paid $800 for samples. They sent me something completely different and then stopped responding."

"I wire-transferred $4,000 for bulk production. The factory disappeared."

"The Alibaba listing looked perfect. The products that arrived looked nothing like the photos."

These are real stories from real clothing brand founders, and they happen more often than the industry likes to admit. The good news: with the right knowledge, virtually all of these situations are preventable.

The Landscape of Clothing Factory Fraud

Not all bad factory experiences are outright scams. They fall into three categories:

Type Description Frequency
Outright fraud Takes your money and disappears Less common but devastating
Trading company posing as factory Middleman adds markup, has no real production control Very common on Alibaba
Quality bait-and-switch Great sample, terrible bulk quality Extremely common
Communication ghosting Responsive before payment, unresponsive after Common with low-tier suppliers

20 Red Flags to Never Ignore

Before Any Payment

  1. 🚩 Requires 100% payment upfront — legitimate factories use 30/70 or 50/50 milestone payments
  2. 🚩 Price is dramatically lower than all other quotes — if it seems too good to be true, it is
  3. 🚩 Cannot provide facility photos or video — real factories are proud of their operations
  4. 🚩 Website is newly created — check domain registration date with WHOIS lookup
  5. 🚩 No verifiable business address — search the address on Google Maps; does a factory exist there?
  6. 🚩 Cannot provide client references — established factories have repeat customers they can reference
  7. 🚩 Pushes to move communication off Alibaba immediately — this removes Trade Assurance protection
  8. 🚩 Refuses to do a video call — a brief video call showing the facility is a basic legitimacy signal

During Sampling

  1. 🚩 Refuses to do sampling before bulk — no legitimate factory expects you to order bulk without samples
  2. 🚩 Sample is suspiciously perfect at an impossibly low price — sample quality is sometimes intentionally inflated
  3. 🚩 Cannot explain their quality control process
  4. 🚩 Communication becomes slower and vaguer after you pay for samples

Before Bulk Production

  1. 🚩 Requests full payment before production starts — standard is 30% deposit, 70% before shipping
  2. 🚩 Refuses to send pre-production sample (PPS) — a PPS confirms bulk will match what you approved
  3. 🚩 Vague on lead time commitments — real factories can commit to realistic deadlines in writing
  4. 🚩 No written production agreement or purchase order

During Production

  1. 🚩 No production updates unless you ask
  2. 🚩 Requests additional payment mid-production without explanation
  3. 🚩 Refuses to allow a third-party quality inspection
  4. 🚩 Asks to ship before final balance is agreed upon

How to Verify a Factory Is Legitimate (Step by Step)

Step 1: Check Their Alibaba or Platform Profile

  • Look for "Verified Supplier" and "Trade Assurance" badges
  • Check how long they've been on the platform (5+ years is a good sign)
  • Read reviews and response rate carefully
  • Check if they're listed as a factory or trading company

Step 2: Request a Video Call + Factory Tour

Ask for a 15-minute video call where they walk you through their production floor. This is one of the most effective vetting tools available. A legitimate factory will do this readily.

Step 3: Search Their Business License

Chinese factories are legally required to have a Business License (营业执照). Ask to see it. You can verify it on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (gsxt.samr.gov.cn).

Step 4: Start With a Small Test Order

Even if a factory seems perfect, your first order should be small. A 50–100 piece test run at slightly higher unit cost is far less risky than a 500-piece first order.

Step 5: Use Secure Payment Methods

Payment Method Protection Level Notes
Alibaba Trade Assurance High Dispute resolution if goods don't match order
PayPal (Goods & Services) High Chargeback available; some factories charge a fee
Credit Card Medium–High Chargeback possible within 60–90 days
T/T Wire Transfer Low No protection once sent; use only with verified partners
Western Union / MoneyGram None Never use for factory payments — common scam vehicle

What to Do If You've Been Scammed

  1. Document everything immediately — screenshots of all communication, payment receipts, contracts
  2. File a dispute with Alibaba Trade Assurance, PayPal, or your credit card issuer
  3. Report to relevant authorities — IC3 (US), Action Fraud (UK), or your local consumer protection agency
  4. Contact a trade lawyer if the amount is significant (above $5,000)
  5. Share your experience in brand founder communities to warn others (r/streetwearstartup, brand Facebook groups)
